The fifth batch of recognized medical qualifications for overseas doctors was announced on Wednesday, which includes 23 universities with 28 medical qualifications.
A total of seven medical qualification courses offered by four mainland institutions - Capital Medical University, Fudan University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology and Sun Yat-sen University - are included in the latest batch.
The other recognized medical qualifications come from universities in Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The US has the most recognized programs at nine, including institutions familiar to Hongkongers such as Stanford University, the University of California, Los Angeles, and the University of Chicago.
Additionally, three well-known programs from British universities, including the University of Cambridge and King's College London, were also listed.
This has brought the medical qualifications for recognition to a total of 128 that the Special Registration Committee recommended.
The list of the fifth batch of recognized medical qualifications will be gazetted on June 28 and take effect on the same day. It will be submitted to the Legislative Council for retrospective approval on July 3.
According to the Medical Registration Ordinance, non-locally trained doctors holding these recognized medical qualifications can apply for special registration to work as doctors in Hong Kong's public healthcare institutions.
After serving a certain period to obtain recognized specialty qualifications and passing assessments, they can be formally registered to practice in Hong Kong.
