Environmental groups and hikers have voiced concerns about the construction of a viewing platform on Fa Shan in Sai Kung, as they fear that a large influx of visitors to the area could exceed the platform's carrying capacity.
Vivien Cheng Yu-wai, the director of community partnership at The Green Earth, stated that a section of the hiking trail leading to the viewing platform is situated near steep slopes. It could raise safety concerns if the public is drawn to the observation deck.
She added that the hexagonal volcanic rock columns have also been exposed to weathering and that the bearing capacity is uncertain.
This came after the construction work began on May 6, with certain sections of the hiking trail blocked off in phases to ensure public safety.
The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) said the concerned viewing platform - a HK$7 million project - on a headland overlooking Po Pin Chau is scheduled for completion by the end of this year.
It stated that the eastern cape of Fa Shan has become a popular spot for viewing Po Pin Chau in recent years. However, many hikers have forged their own paths, leading to vegetation deterioration and soil erosion in the area.
The AFCD noted that safety barriers and information boards will be set up at the viewing platform, while works on preventing soil erosion and vegetation management will be carried out to ensure the safety of hikers.
