This came after the Harbourfront Commission earlier suggested loosening regulations for food trucks and allowing them to roam around the promenades and other areas like ice-cream vans to attract business.
One of the operators, surnamed Choi, said the appearance of food trucks is gimmicky and could attract more tourists than ordinary vendors. They believed that the stationary business model would be more beneficial for them as it would eliminate the need to spend extra on fuel and time for setting up the stores.
The food truck pilot scheme ended in mid-2022, and six vehicles - including Choi's one - moved to the West Kowloon Cultural District to continue operations.
Choi believed it was crucial to operate the food truck in crowded areas such as Tamar Park on weekends, or collaborate with event organizers to park near venues to attract customers.
The Development Bureau said it would study the feasibility of issuing temporary food factory licenses according to various events and would look for suitable seaside venues to discuss appropriate operating frameworks with relevant departments.
The Bureau also plans to gradually introduce smart retail machines to sell ice cream, popcorn, and other light snacks in Wan Chai and Cha Kwo Ling starting in the middle of this year to draw customers.
