MTR Corporation announced on Friday that the Hung Shui Kiu station project will only be worked on for four to six hours per week as it involves the rails that will remain in use.
In its latest report, the MTR Corporation provided significant updates on several new railway projects, including East Rail Line Kwu Tung Station, Tung Chung Line Siu Ho Wan Station, etc.
The main construction work for Tuen Ma Line Hung Shui Kiu Station will also begin this year, and all projects are expected to be completed between 2027 and 2034.
The rail giant said the Hung Shui Kiu station project is the first station built on an elevated railway in Hong Kong. The majority of the work is being carried out on operating railway lines, adding a significant level of complexity and difficulty to the project.
To reduce the impact on regular services, only the "golden two hours" of non-operating time at night can be fully utilized for construction, with only 4 to 6 hours per week.
Walter Lam Wai-tak, project manager, pointed out that most of the processes have been separated, and the preparation work that can be carried out during operating hours will be arranged to be carried out during the day.
He described the project's biggest challenge as time, protecting the safety of the existing railways, and ensuring that it can be opened to traffic smoothly the next day.
Lam also pointed out that, to buy time, the engineering team has successively carried out a series of preparatory processes on a 200-meter-long viaduct between Tin Shui Wai Station and Siu Hong Station on the Tuen Ma Line, including modifying overhead power lines and removing 140 retaining wall components, which will hinder the structure of the future station platform.
He said they are confident that the entire project can be completed in 2030 to accommodate the first batch of residents in the Hung Shui Kiu New Development Area.
