Hong Kong’s sole railway operator MTR Corporation announced on Wednesday that Kwun Tong Line stations from Prince Edward to Ho Man Tin will not provide train services for one full day on July 28 to renew the cable rack.
The move will only affect train services on the Kwun Tong Line, while train services running between Prince Edward - Tiu Keng Leng and Whampoa - Ho Man Tin will remain operational.
Partnering with the Kowloon Motor Bus, passengers will be able to commute for free on KMB bus routes 8 and 30X as alternative transportation, said the MTR.
The railway operator said the renewal involves a 70-meter-long tunnel, having over 50 cable racks on its ceiling which have been in service for over 40 years.
The cable racks must be replaced, with the process requiring the isolation and relocation of the cables, said the MTR, adding that the “complex” engineering task must be completed in one go and cannot be done within the golden window of two hours per night after the end of train services.
Apart from the two extra KMB routes, temporary free shuttle buses will also be provided during the upgrade works.
The operator promised that rail services will resume the next day.
