The Immigration Department recorded around 1.436 million tourists visiting Hong Kong during the Chinese New Year holidays - of which more than 1.25 million were mainland tourists - and the total numbers have reached and exceeded the levels of the same period in 2018, respectively.
The daily average number of mainland visitors was 157,000, which exceeded the figures during the Labour Day Holiday and National Day Golden Week last year by 25.3 percent and 14.9 percent.
On February 12 - the third day of the Lunar New Year - the arrival of mainland visitors reached its peak with approximately 186,000. The Express Rail Link West Kowloon received the highest daily average number of visitors, followed by Lo Wu.
During the Golden Week, the hotel occupancy rate surpassed 80 percent, which also benefitted businesses in the catering and retail industries. Around 66,000 mainland tourists from 1,980 tour groups visited Hong Kong, accounting for 5.3 percent of total visitors.
Eric Chan Kwok-ki, the Chief Secretary for Administration, stated that the border arrangements during the Lunar New Year holiday were effective. The round-the-clock services at the Shenzhen Bay border crossing also made it more convenient for tourists.
The Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Kevin Yeung Yun-hung expressed his gratitude to various government departments and tourism-related organizations for their efforts in providing good travel experiences to visitors.
He added that the significant events during Chinese New Year, including the night parade, the fireworks display, the horse race, and the Chinese New Year Cup, were viral and believed visitors could experience the intense festive atmosphere as well as the unique metropolitan glamour of Hong Kong.
