(Video) Hong Kong-bound China Eastern Airlines flight diverted to Xiamen after suspected engine failure

A Hong Kong-bound flight operated by China Eastern Airlines was diverted to Xiamen shortly after it took off from Shanghai on Sunday, with sources saying it was due to engine failure.

The airline said the crew of flight MU721, which set off from Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport at 8.30 am, found a mechanical issue mid-air. 

The crew followed the established procedures and diverted the flight to Xiamen before 10 am for further inspection, according to China Eastern Airlines.

Videos filmed during the emergency landing were also circulated online, showing heavy vibrations of the aircraft rattled the passengers.

It was learned that the mechanical issue is believed to be related to the engine, and a burning smell also emerged from the cabin.

China Eastern Airlines apologizes for the inconvenience caused and guarantees they will arrange for passengers to resume travel as soon as possible.
