Chinese golfer Lin Xiyu has won her third Ladies European Tour (LET) title after securing a playoff victory at the Aramco Team Series in Hong Kong on Sunday.
The final round of the event has to be canceled due to Typhoon Koinu after the Observatory issued a typhoon no. 8 signal at 12.40 pm today.
At the end of the second round on Saturday (Oct 7), Korea’s Ko Jin Young and China’s Lin were tied at the top of the leaderboard on 11-under-par each.
With the tournament being shortened to 36 holes, Ko and Lin returned to Hong Kong Golf Club on Sunday morning for a playoff.
On the first playoff hole, Lin had the chance to make a par putt to win after World Number 3 Ko made a mistake by hitting it into the water.
However, her putt missed on the right side of the hole and could only tap in for a five before Ko rolled in her putt to make a five and send them both back to the tee.
Lin landed her second shot on the edge of the green, while Ko was off the green on the right-hand side. The world number 12 Chinese star rolled in her critical birdie putt to pressure the two-time Major champion, who needed to make her chip shot.
Despite making a good effort, Ko could not make a birdie, allowing Lin to nab her third LET title.
The newly crowned champion said it meant a lot to her and was happy she could do it with everyone watching.
She added that she was nervous after missing the shorter winning putt on the first hole but was able to recompose herself and realized that her play was a lot smoother on the second hole.
She said winning against world numbers one and three was a good feeling and thanked the local fans for their support.
This was the third playoff that Lin has contended in over the past two seasons, losing two on the LPGA Tour at the 2022 Honda LPGA Thailand and 2023 JM Eagle LA Championship.
