A total of 18 youngsters from three correctional institutes enrolled in this year’s Diploma of Secondary Education exams, and one candidate from Sha Tsui Correctional Institution scored an overall 29 marks in six subject taken.
That candidate nabbed a level 5** in Chinese Language and a 5* in Liberal Studies.
The 18 youngsters were from Sha Tsui Correctional Institution, Pik Uk Correctional Institution and Lai King Correctional Institution.
They took a total of 106 examination papers and obtained level 2 or above in 83 papers, scoring 78.3 per cent of all papers taken.
Eight of them also met the general entrance requirements for local universities.
The exams sat included the four core subjects of Chinese Language, English Language, Mathematics and Liberal Studies as well as the two electives of Economics and Tourism and Hospitality Studies.
“Study prepares these youngsters in custody for their reintegration into society, and academic qualifications obtained in public examinations can improve their chances of finding jobs or furthering their studies,” said Chan Man-yat, superintendent of Sha Tsui Correctional Institution.
