Everyone owns the responsibility of waste reduction and recycling. The Environmental Protection Department (EPD) has established a community recycling network called GREEN@COMMUNITY to facilitate the public to practise resource separation and recycling. To encourage the public to integrate clean recycling practices into daily life, the EPD has launched the campaign “GREEN@COMMUNITY Recycling Month”. During the promotion period from 26 November to 31 December, members of the public can enjoy six times GREEN$ when doing recycling at the GREEN@COMMUNITY network.
Since its brand revamp in 2020, more and more people have got used to carry out clean recycling at over 160 recycling points of the GREEN@COMMUNITY regularly, where members of the public can earn GREEN$, raise their own “recycling record” and redeem gift items such as food, daily necessities, recycled products, and limited edition souvenirs of Big Waster and Greeny. To encourage more members of the public to participate in resource separation and recycling, the EPD is organising a series of activities under the GREEN@COMMUNITY Recycling Month for participation of the public to turn waste into useful materials. This campaign is under the exclusive sponsorship of The Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC), as one of the many initiatives supported by the HKJC's approved donation of HK$630 million to the Government of the HKSAR to mark the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the HKSAR, demonstrating that the HKJC is resolute in pursuing its purpose of acting continuously for the betterment of our society, all in support of creating stronger communities together.
Eight Types of Recyclables, Not Waste
From 26 November to 31 December this year, members of the public can earn six times GREEN$ when they submit eight types of designated recyclables, namely waste paper, metals, plastics, glass containers, regulated electrical equipment, small electrical appliances, fluorescent lamps/tubes and rechargeable batteries to any recycling points of the GREEN@COMMUNITY for recycling. With this promotion, the public can earn GREEN$ faster for redemption of favourite gift items.
Recyclables collected by the GREEN@COMMUNITY will be sorted preliminarily and delivered to suitable downstream recyclers for processing and recycling into useful materials. For example, glass can be recycled into silica sand for production of eco-paving blocks and construction filling materials. Waste plastics can also be processed into raw materials and exported to other places for manufacturing of plastic products.
RECYCLING FESTS to Educate the Public through Funfairs and Games
The EPD is, in collaboration with the operators of Recycling Stations, organising RECYCLING FESTS in 11 Recycling Stations during the GREEN@COMMUNITY Recycling Month. A wide variety of funfair and educational activities, including booth games, upcycling workshops and second-hand exchange markets, will be organised to encourage the public to participate in resource separation and recycling. In addition to gaining more knowledge in waste reduction and recycling, the public can also have the chance to get gift items and to experience the newly installed smart recycling facilities. Do get together with families and friends in RECYCLING FEST to spend a green weekend with lots of funs!
As part of the GREEN@COMMUNITY Recycling Month activities, the EPD also created a thematic song "Please Clean Recycle" featuring the popular actress and singer Yanny Chan (https://fb.watch/h4piufZBVq/). This light-hearted and catchy song invites the public to take their first step toward waste reduction and clean recycling.
GREEN@COMMUNITY Delivers Exceptional Performance
There are currently 11 Recycling Stations, 32 Recycling Stores, and more than 120 Recycling Spots operating regularly at fixed locations under the GREEN@COMMUNITY network over the territory. Over 14 440 tonnes of recyclables were collected in 2021, which was a four-fold increase over the previous year.
Meanwhile, the EPD is working to reshape the Recycling Stations. Incorporating the design concept of placemaking with a theme of “GREEEEEEN WAVE”, the EPD is setting up new co-creation activity space in Recycling Stations to expand their functionality, thereby fostering their role as the starting point for promoting a green living style in the community.
