The railway scheme for the Tung Chung Line Extension was published in the Gazette on Friday in accordance with the Railways Ordinance.
A government spokesman said the construction works of the proposed project are expected to commence in 2023 at the earliest after the authorization of the scheme and are expected to be completed by 2029.
"The Tung Chung New Town Extension (TCNTE) is one of the important, medium-to-long-term sources of land supply to meet Hong Kong's housing, economic and social needs,” said the spokesman.
“The Tung Chung Line Extension will offer direct railway access to the Tung Chung New Town Extension in support of the long-term, sustainable growth in population and employment opportunities in that area."
The spokesman also added that the journey time by railway from Tung Chung West Station and Tung Chung East Station to Tsim Sha Tsui/Central Stations will be reduced by 12 and 21 minutes respectively.
