Olympics foil fencing champion Edgar Cheung Ka-long has withdrawn from the National Games after he suffered a left knee injury during training.
To play safe, the Hong Kong team has arranged for him to withdraw from the games and return to Hong Kong for treatment this morning.
Cheung flew to Shenzhen directly after the Olympics, and went to Tianjin for the National Games fencing tournament after finishing quarantine.
But he injured his left knee during his final preparation and it swelled up a bit.
"I will focus on recovery and hope to return soon," Cheung said.
His foil teammates Ryan Choi Chun-yin, Cheung Siu-lun and Yeung Chi-ka will remain in Tianjin for the National Games, competing in the individual competition on Sunday and team competition on September 20.
Nicholas Edward Choi Ho-yin won silver for foil fencing in the last two National Games, while men's team won bronze in group event last time.
In addition, women's team epee player Chu Ka-mong also withdrew from the Games to return to Hong Kong for treatment earlier due to hand injuries.
