The truck overturned and hit the sports car.
The collision happened when the amber rainstorm signal and thunderstorm warnings were announced today with heavy rain exceeding 30 millimeters an hour recorded across the city.
Mak, 28, the driver of the orange Porsche 911 GT-R, was sent unconscious to Tuen Mun Hospital today.
But he later regained consciousness.
The truck’s driver, Lai, 38, and two passengers -- 61-year-old Lo in the truck and 30-year-old Liu in the car -- were sent to North District Hospital in Sheung Shui.
The two drivers and Liu had head injuries and Lo chest pain.
Mak remained in critical condition this evening, whereas Lai and Lo were in stable condition.
And Liu has been discharged from hospital.
At about 10 am today, the two vehicles were travelling on San Tin Highway in Lok Ma Chau heading to Sheung Shui.
Thirty minutes later, near residential complex Palm Springs in San Tin, the sports car rammed the truck’s rear, apparently due to the slippery highway.
The car hit the railings and the highway’s central divider. The truck overturned and landed on the side of the car.
Firemen rescued both drivers who were trapped along one passenger in each vehicle.
The injured were then rushed to North District Hospital and Tuen Mun Hospital.
The car’s roof, windscreen and front were detached and the driving seat’s airbag popped out.
The truck’s windscreen was torn away.
The highway’s central divider was wrecked. Cars backed up from San Wai Tsuen to Mai Po Lo Wai along the 2.5-kilometer highway.
The Transport Department said the Sheung Shui-bound section of San Tin Highway’s fast and slow lanes were closed due to the accident.
However, at 2.04 pm the department announced that both lanes were re-opened to all traffic.
The amber rainstorm signal, issued at 10.05 am, was lifted at 12.15 pm, whereas the thunderstorm warning, hoisted at 7.05 am, was canceled at 1.30 pm.
