Maggie Yang Mei-kei, who is the prosecutor in the pro-democracy camp primary case, has been appointed as director of public prosecutions at the Department of Justice.
Yang spearheaded the prosecution of the 47 pro-democracy figures facing subversion charges over their involvement in a Legco primary poll earlier this year. She was made senior counsel last month.
According to the government gazette, Yang, who joined the Prosecutions Division of the department in 1994 as Crown Counsel, will be made Director of Public Prosecutions effective from August 13.
The department said Yang was selected for the position through a promotion-cum-open recruitment exercise.
Yang was admitted as a solicitor in the United Kingdom and Hong Kong in 1992 and 1993 respectively, and was subsequently called to the Bar in 2021. After joining the department, she was promoted to Senior Crown Counsel in 1996, Deputy Principal Government Counsel in 2012 and Principal Government Counsel in 2019.
Welcoming the appointment, Secretary for Justice, Teresa Cheng Yuek-wah said Yang is a lawyer of outstanding abilities and integrity.
“I am confident that she is competent to lead the Prosecutions Division to rise to the challenges ahead and discharge her role as the Director of Public Prosecutions in a fair and impartial manner,” said Cheng.
