Before the 10am opening, eager citizens were already queuing up to enter the venue, and those towards the front of the queue planned to bag the HK$1 bargains on offer by the different exhibitors.
Many exhibitors offered massive discounts to attract customers, such as Wagyu beef, poon choi, and abalone for the price of HK$1. A limited amount of HK$1 assorted seafood offered by one of the stalls was snapped up within a minute after the opening.
However, some exhibitors still expect their total revenue to drop by 20 percent due to the lower number of attendees.
The expo will also feature the International Wine and Spirit Fair, the Tea Fair, the Home Delights Expo, and the Beauty and the Wellness Expo, along with a Gourmet Zone.
Among some 900 exhibitors, 85 percent of them have already installed e-payment systems.
The HKTDC Food Expo will open from August 12 to 15. The admission fee for the above exhibitions, excluding the Gourmet Zone, would be HK$25. Children aged three or below and elderly aged 65 or above can enjoy free admission.
Visitors would be required to pay for admission by Octopus at the hall entrances. Tickets are now also available at all Hong Kong Ticketing outlets, as well as convenience stores and the Octopus app.
Organizer Hong Kong Trade Development Council will also offer free admission to 30,000 citizens who have received at least one dose of the Covid vaccine.
