The median age for women to get married for the first time increased to over 30 in 2020, according to data announced by the Census and Statistics Department.
The Department published the "Women and Men in Hong Kong – Key Statistics (2021 Edition)" today and depicted the situation of women and men in major economic and social spheres.
The publication revealed that the median age for women to get married for the first time increased from 29.9 in 2019 to 30.4 in 2020, while that for males climbed from 31.6 in 2019 to 31.9 in 2020.
The increase in the median age for first marriage for both females and males indicated a trend of late marriage, according to the publication.
It also showed that the median age of women to have her firstborn rose from 31.8 in 2018 to 32.3 in two years.
It pointed out that the median age of women for first childbirth had risen steadily from 28.1 in 1991 to 32.3 in 2020.
The publication on the other hand depicted the sex ratio of the city as well.
The sex ratio – the number of males per 1,000 females – decreased continuously over the past three decades or so. Although it slightly increased by two to 840 males in 2020, it is still lower than 2016's record of 852 males.
Excluding foreign domestic helpers, the sex ratio stands at 913 males to 1,000 females in 2020.
