Police condemned netizens for calling the attacker who wounded a police officer in Causeway Bay last night a “brave man” or even a “martyr”.
Last night Leung Kin-fai, 50, stabbed the back of a 28-year-old police officer with a knife outside Sogo Department Store in Causeway Bay. The officer suffered severe injury and Leung then killed himself.
Police found out people online have been calling Leung a “brave man” or even a “martyr” and paying tribute to Leung. Police condemned these people for supporting violent crimes and romanticizing cold-blooded behaviours. These actions count as advocating hatred as well, police pointed out.
Police added that Leung was radicalized by misleading information and inciting speeches, and therefore initiated a “lone-wolf style terrorism attack”. Leung explicitly challenged the law and damaged the order of the society, police also said.
Officers stressed that violence will be not be tolerated as a means to any ends. Officers will hold fast to their duties and take resolute enforcement actions in accordance with the law.
Under the Crimes Ordinance, anyone who does or attempts to do, or makes any preparation to do, or conspires with any person to do, any act with a seditious intention, upon conviction, is liable to two-year imprisonment and a HK$5,000 fine upon conviction.
