Hong Kong raised the gale or storm warning signal No 8 tonight just as the severe tropical storm Higos tracked closer.
Winds with average speeds of 63 kilometers per hour or more are expected.
Higos will be closest to Hong Kong within the next couple of hours, skirting about 100 kilometers to the southwest of Hong Kong. The winds are expected to strengthen further. The No. 8 signal will remain in force overnight and tomorrow morning.
The Hong Kong Observatory had alerted the city hours earlier that gale or storm signal would be issued at or before 10:40 p.m. today.
