Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor says she hopes to be be able to announce next month the setting up of a committee that will to look into the causes of Hong Kong's unrest, adding that it will help heal divisions in society, RTHK reports.
At a question and answer session at the Legislative Council, Lam said the "independent review committee" will be comprised of social leaders, experts and academics who will look at deep-seated problems in society.
She described the forming of the committee as an "important step" towards reconciliation after more than seven months of protests.
She had previously said that the administration was encountering difficulties in finding people to join the committee, saying this was because people fear personal attacks and doxxing.
But she told lawmakers that the preparatory work is now almost done.
Several pan-democratic lawmakers including the Civic Party’s Kwok Ka-ki, Council Front's Chu Hoi-dick and People Power's Ray Chan were ordered to leave the meeting after repeatedly interrupting Lam.
The lawmakers chanted slogans like “five demands, not one less” and “Carrie Lam, step down.''
Critics of the plan to set up a committee say the protesters have already made it very clear was is motivating their continued anti-government campaign and only an independent inquiry into police brutality will suffice.
