The mysteries of the ancient Shu civilization are brought to life in the “Voyage into Shu: Exploring Sanxingdui and Jinsha” exhibition, which takes visitors on an extraordinary journey through time using state-of-the-art virtual reality and interactive technology.
Running until November 15 at the Hong Kong Maritime Museum, this immersive digital exhibition bridges the gap between archaeology and innovation, offering a fresh perspective on the enigmatic Sanxingdui archaeological site.
At the heart of the experience is the VR archaeological journey, a 30-minute adventure that immerses participants in the Bronze Age virtually.
Visitors can explore reconstructed historical scenes, such as the Sanxingdui excavation site, which features iconic bronze statues, the golden mask, and other remarkable relics. Guided by a “living” bronze giant, users can interact with relics, observe archaeological processes, and even experience an aerial view of the ancient kingdom.
For aspiring archaeologists, the interactive archaeological activities provide a practical opportunity to role-play as excavators. Using dual touchscreen stations, participants can simulate digging, sorting, and analyzing artifacts to enhance their understanding of the meticulous work involved in uncovering history.
The most impressive feature is the Cave Automatic Virtual Environment immersive panorama. This five-screen installation surrounds visitors with a 360-degree digital recreation of the Sanxingdui site, creating a fully immersive environment that brings the past to life like never before. Complementing this are a series of interactive digital archives, where touchscreen displays provide in-depth insights into the Shu civilization’s artifacts, history, and cultural achievements.
The exhibition seeks to make the discoveries of Sanxingdui archaeology accessible to everyone, blending education and entertainment in a way that sparks the imagination. By integrating cutting-edge technologies with the allure of ancient history, the Sanxingdui VR experience offers a unique opportunity to connect with a distant civilization, bringing history to life for contemporary audiences.
For families, students, and history enthusiasts alike, the Hong Kong Maritime Museum’s “Voyage into Shu” offers something truly fresh – a playful, highly educational exhibition where entertainment blends with archival precision, turning ancient Chinese history into a lively, interactive journey.
