Passengers can enjoy faster mobile connectivity while traveling on the MTR as the rail company is upgrading the 5G network at 24 stations.
In collaboration with four mobile network operators, MTR Corp is installing 3.3 and 3.5 GHz indoor base stations to upgrade the 5G network in these stations, which are busier ones.
The Office of the Communications Authority has welcomed the initiative by the MTRC and the mobile operators.
China Mobile Hong Kong was awarded the contract to carry out the installation work, with the first new radio base station going live at Tin Hau station yesterday.
The transport operator expects to complete the upgrades in Wan Chai, Kowloon and Admiralty stations by year-end, while the remaining stations are scheduled for completion by 2027.
This upgrade will allow more passengers to use the mobile network simultaneously and enhance the service quality for users of participating mobile networks.
"The further upgrade of spectrum enables passengers to stay connected at all times with a faster, smoother and more stable 5G mobile service in MTR stations and train compartments," said MTRC managing director Jeny Yeung Mei-chun.
CMHK's director and executive vice president, Shi Xiaoping, said: "The launch of the 3.3 and 3.5 GHz indoor base stations is an important step toward realizing smart mobility and smart city initiatives in Hong Kong."
The mobile giant will continue to support the development of 5G technology and applications in Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area, Shi added.
OFCA said the new radio base stations will significantly increase the speed and capacity of 5G services along MTR lines.
Hong Kong is already among global leaders in 5G coverage and service penetration, with both metrics around 90 percent of the population.
