The latest round of the Hong Kong Pals program is now accepting applications, encouraging young people to volunteer and assist tourists. The program, launched in 2009, has already attracted more than 100 volunteers from various sectors, of whom two-thirds are retired.
Alice Li, the general manager of Corporate Affairs at the Hong Kong Tourism Board, said the program aims to recruit more volunteers from the youth sector, particularly university students, to serve at HKTB visitor centers and mega events across the SAR.
The HKTB has conducted briefings at different universities and tertiary education institutes to attract tourism and hospitality students.
Dane Cheng Ting-yat, the executive director of the HKTB, said:"We hope that both new and experienced volunteers can work together to promote the idea and values of the volunteer program, thereby upholding Hong Kong's reputation as a hospitable travel destination."
In the current phase of public recruitment, the HKTB seeks an additional 30 to 40 volunteers, on top of the existing 65.
The board is seeking friendly and hospitable individuals with knowledge of various tourism-related fields, including traditional local culture, shopping, food and drink, green tourism, arts, culture and entertainment. Fluency in Cantonese, English and Mandarin is required, as well as a passion for engaging in conversation with tourists.
The recruitment process involves two rounds of interviews, scheduled for June.
Successful candidates will participate in a comprehensive training program organized by the HKTB from August to October. Training will cover hospitality and storytelling skills, local culture, tourist attractions and green tourism.
The volunteers will be stationed at HKTB visitor centers located at the Tsim Sha Tsui Star Ferry Concourse, Hong Kong International Airport, Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, Ocean Terminal, West Kowloon Station and the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge. They will provide assistance, answer questions and offer sightseeing recommendations to tourists, both at the visitor centers and during HKTB mega events.
Agnes, a retired senior management professional from a multinational corporation, has been a Hong Kong Pal for 12 years. Sharing her positive experience, she said the program keeps her retirement life fulfilling with its combination of challenges and fun.
She described volunteering "as a source of happiness and satisfaction," comparing it to a session of laughter yoga that fills her with positivity.
