Bus enthusiasts were thrilled to see the new electric double-deckers at KMB's open day at Yuet Lun Street depot, Lai Chi Kok.
Around 6,000 visitors checked out "KMB Journey" from 10am to 4pm yesterday.
BYD's green 12-meter electric double-decker, named B12D, can carry 115 passengers and runs for 300 kilometers after charging for up to three hours.
Visitors expressed excitement at the new model.
"It is hoped that electric buses can replace all traditional buses, so that the pollution problem would be alleviated," said one.
KMB said it has received 42 B12D buses from the Shenzhen-based electric car company.
KMB also said final inspection is in progress and it is estimated the first would be in service this month.
The operator introduced single-deck electric buses, also produced by BYD, in April last year.
KMB Journey also showed older bus models from the 1980s and 90s, including the Dennis Dragon and Volvo Olympian.
"I wanted to see the buses without air conditioning as it is a bus that I liked a lot," a boy said.
KMB also held a recruitment day at the depot. Frontline staff such as bus captains, inspectors, assistant terminus supervisers and operations assistants are being recruited.
Those interested were given employment information - such as job requirements and benefits packages. These include a free bus pass, two or more dependent passes that can be used on bus routes operated by three franchised bus companies, medical insurance, year-end double pay and scholarships for children.
Applicants took interviews on site, and those applying for the position of bus captain were able to take a driving test.
A booth to promote a monthly pass was available. Passengers could buy one for HK$780 and get 10 rides on 450 KMB and Long Win Bus Co routes daily.
The day of the event was one of the free-ride days for children during the summer holiday. Children can get free bus rides every Sunday in July and August and unlimited free rides on KMB and LWB routes, except Routes K12, K14, K17 and K18.
