Grand old time with 'Uncle Ray'

Legendary DJ "Uncle Ray" Cordeiro is busy organizing a concert for November in his name, though it's not for himself but for people who could be in tough times just now because of the pandemic.

At 96 he will become the oldest personality to host a concert at the Hong Kong Coliseum. In doing so he raises by seven years the record set by Bowie Wu Fung. The actor and director staged a concert in June at the age of 89. Uncle Ray, listed as "The world's most durable DJ," retired in May after more than seven decades in broadcasting.

And the two-night concert to mark his retirement will be on November 6 and 7.

Word is that a dozen big-name singers will be performing, with Teresa Carpio, Elisa Chan Kit-ling and William So Wing-hong among them.

People familiar with the bookings say Uncle Ray only agreed to the concert as he wanted to help people in the music industry whose earning power has been hit by coronavirus.

Performers in the concert will collect only a red packet for their efforts, which will include them doing their own makeup and hair.
