Instead of family gatherings, dozens of bus enthusiasts flooded a Cheung Sha Wan intersection for a shot of a Lunar New Year bus on Tuesday morning—prompting police intervention and online outrage.
Photos shared online captured more than 30 people surging onto the roadway at the junction of Cheung Sha Wan Road and Tonkin Street near Cheung Sha Wan Estate, phones raised and eyes fixed on the approaching vehicle.
The crowd’s dash into oncoming traffic drew sharp criticism for endangering themselves and other road users.
Police confirmed receiving a report around 9.52am from a resident that more than a dozen people had rushed onto the road, posing a potential danger.
Upon arrival, officers conducted an investigation and reclassified the case as "miscellaneous."
Online reaction was swift and furious, with commenters slamming the group for irresponsibility during family-oriented Lunar New Year.
One wrote, “Not even going home for the first day? Please behave for one day.”
Others sarcastically called for fines, suggesting “HK$2,000 each, thanks!”
It is understood that the involved bus, operating on Route 1R between Hung Hom and Po Lin Monastery on Lantau Island, was adorned with festive decorations for the Year of the Horse.
The bus reportedly began its route around 9.15am this morning, passing through areas including Tsim Sha Tsui, Mong Kok, Prince Edward, Sham Shui Po, Tung Chung, and Tong Fuk.
