Hong Kong International Airport’s Terminal 2 will officially open on May 27, with around 15 airlines operating short-haul and regional routes moving in phases, featuring smart check-in facilities and seamless connection to Terminal 1 to handle growing passenger numbers.
The Airport Authority chairman, Fred Lam, announced during today’s Lunar New Year celebrations that Terminal 2’s departure facilities will start operating in May, helping manage the expected summer travel peak.
The new terminal adopts a vibrant, youthful and tech-forward design with advanced self-service features and expanded dining options, aiming to deliver a more comfortable and convenient experience.
Passenger traffic has already surged during the extended Lunar New Year holiday, with daily arrivals and departures exceeding 200,000 people in recent days, a trend likely to continue next week.
The Secretary for Transport and Logistics Mable Chan reported that the airport handled 61 million passengers last year, up 15 percent from the previous year, and 5 million tonnes of cargo, positioning it to remain the world’s busiest airport for the 15th year.
Following the commissioning of the third runway, the government has expanded air links, signing aviation agreements with nine new partners, including Chile, Ecuador and Poland, last year, with plans to add 10 more in regions such as South America, Central Asia, the Middle East and Africa next year.
Terminal 2’s modern design is expected to attract new airlines and open routes to emerging destinations.
Together with Terminal 1, it will significantly increase overall capacity and support further passenger growth.
The new coach terminal at Terminal 2, which began operations on September 23, 2025, offers 41 parking bays for tour buses, cross-boundary coaches, private cars, crew buses and resident buses, plus cross-boundary ticketing counters serving over 110 destinations in the Greater Bay Area.
