As the city welcomed in the Year of the Horse, the crack and boom of illegal fireworks shattered the night sky over the streets of Tuen Mun and Yuen Long.
A 21-second clip circulating online captured around 20 fireworks being set off near Tung Lok Street in Yuen Long late at night.
The footage shows the fireworks being launched just metres from surrounding buildings, filling the night sky with smoke and loud explosions—posing both fire risks and noise disturbances for nearby residents.
Another clip recorded fireworks shooting from the Wo Tin Estate in Tuen Mun, where a series of bright sparks and loud blasts continued for roughly a minute.
Lui, a resident of the nearby Novo Land in Tuen Mun, reported that the banging started around 11.52pm last night and continued until about 12.30am on the first day of the Lunar New Year.
Police received reports around 5.11am over an illegal firework display on On Ning Road. Upon their arrival, they discovered debris from spent fireworks but made no arrests.
Additionally, two separate reports of illegal firework activity in Tseung Kwan O were received around 12.30am but officers found no trace of the offenders after searching the area.
Under the Dangerous Goods Ordinance, the illegal possession or discharge of fireworks is an offense that carries a maximum penalty of a HK$25,000 fine and a six-month imprisonment.
