Statement-taking in the investigation into the deadly Wang Fuk Court fire in Tai Po is nearing completion, Police Commissioner Joe Chow Yat-ming said on Saturday, adding that scientific examinations are now underway before residents can safely return to their homes.
Speaking on a radio program this morning, Siu said the cross-departmental task force has largely finished recording statements and now requires time to conduct forensic analysis. Scaffolding at the scene is also being dismantled.
He described the structural damage caused by the blaze as severe, noting that in some areas load-bearing walls were burned down to exposed steel reinforcements, while ceilings were extensively destroyed. Authorities must ensure the building is structurally safe before any reoccupation can be arranged, he said.
Siu also revealed that police have charged three individuals in connection with the incident, alleging offenses including publishing seditious materials and obstructing investigations relating to national security.
He said some people had attempted to exploit a major incident to incite acts endangering national security, adding that authorities “cannot allow inciting intentions to take root.” Chow further warned that local terrorism should not be overlooked.
At the same time, he said residents are free to criticize the government, provided such criticism carries “value and quality.” He added that the government will listen to views expressed through different channels and make improvements where appropriate.
