A 28-year-old man was killed and two drivers injured after a taxi collided with a roadworks vehicle on North Lantau Highway on Wednesday morning.
The accident occurred at 9.49am when a green New Territories taxi traveling toward the airport crashed into an arrow board-mounted truck near Citygate Outlets in Tung Chung.
Initial reports suggested that a male passenger had been thrown from the vehicle. However, rescue personnel found the 28-year-old passenger seriously injured and unconscious inside the taxi. He was rushed to North Lantau Hospital but was later pronounced dead.
The 43-year-old taxi driver and the 41-year-old driver of the works vehicle sustained minor injuries and were taken to Princess Margaret Hospital for treatment.
At the scene, the taxi’s front end was severely damaged and caught fire, with smoke billowing from the vehicle. Debris was scattered across the roadway. The rear impact attenuator of the arrow truck was also heavily damaged in the crash.

According to sources, the works vehicle was carrying out operations in the fast lane at the time of the incident. The taxi, which was traveling behind in the same lane, reportedly collided with the rear of the truck.
It is suspected that the passenger may not have been wearing a seat belt and was thrown upward inside the cabin, sustaining a severe head injury.
Police are investigating the cause of the accident.
