A Hong Kong couple found their private intimate moments from a 2023 Shenzhen hotel stay secretly recorded and broadcast live to paying viewers on hidden-camera porn sites, exposing a large underground voyeur industry operating across Chinese hotels.
A Hong Kong man in his 30s, using the pseudonym Eric, was browsing adult content on social media one evening when he recognized himself and his girlfriend, Emily (also a pseudonym), in a video.
The footage showed their private time together in a Shenzhen hotel room three weeks earlier.
Hidden cameras had captured everything without their knowledge, turning them from viewers into victims of a widespread voyeur network.
According to a BBC investigation, at least six websites and apps have promoted live feeds from over 180 hotels in China via Telegram channels in the past 18 months.
Reporters subscribed to one service run by a promoter called “AKA” for a monthly fee of about 450 yuan.
Subscribers could access multiple channels showing various hotel rooms; footage appeared instantly whenever a guest inserted their room card to activate power. The platform also allowed rewind and video downloads.
One channel reportedly had up to 10,000 members. Based on subscriber numbers and fees, the “AKA” operation alone likely earned at least 163,200 yuan since April last year.
The problem persists despite China’s 2024 regulation banning cameras in hotel rooms, guesthouses, and public bathrooms, which also requires operators to conduct regular checks.
Hidden cameras disguised as everyday objects like tissue boxes, chargers, and clocks remain easily available on e-commerce platforms and social apps.
In response, demand has surged for anti-spy devices such as pinhole camera detectors, with prices ranging from tens to thousands of yuan on Chinese online marketplaces.
Eric and Emily remain traumatized, avoiding hotels, wearing hats in public to prevent recognition, and staying away from those adult channels—though Eric occasionally checks them out of fear the footage might resurface.
