One South Asian defendant was convicted of murder, and two others were found guilty of manslaughter by a High Court jury on Friday (Feb 6) over the fatal stabbing of 35-year-old Pakistani man Fayzan Ali in Jordan three years ago. A fourth defendant was acquitted of all charges.
The court heard that Ali was chased and stabbed by five knife-wielding attackers after leaving New Lucky House in the early hours of August 29, 2022. He sustained multiple wounds and collapsed at the junction of Jordan Road and Parkes Street, and was later pronounced dead in hospital.
After deliberations, the seven-member jury returned a majority verdict of 5–2 to convict Singh Gurpreet of murder. Singh Harwinder and Singh Gurjinder were cleared of murder but convicted of manslaughter by majority verdicts of 5–2 and 6–1, respectively. Shingari Dheeraj was acquitted of both murder and manslaughter.
Prosecutors said CCTV footage showed the victim being surrounded and pursued by five masked men at about 4am, with Gurpreet identified among the attackers. The group fled on foot after the assault.
The prosecution added that Harwinder and Gurjinder acted as drivers, transporting several assailants to and from the scene by motorcycle and private car. Dheeraj was alleged to have called the victim beforehand to arrange a meeting.
A post-mortem found that Ali died from severe blood loss caused by multiple knife wounds. Cocaine and methamphetamine were also detected in his system.
Police recovered a sports bag and broken glass at the scene and later seized four knives from a construction site rooftop, with the victim’s DNA found on one of the blades. Gurjinder’s DNA was found inside a vehicle linked to the case.
The court also heard that Gurpreet had reported to police earlier that day that he was attacked by an unknown man while drinking in Chungking Mansions.
The case has been adjourned to next Thursday for sentencing.
