Strong demand over the Christmas peak saw eight days in December with daily passenger numbers exceeding 200,000. In December alone, the airport handled 5.8 million passengers, up 13.5 percent year-on-year, with flight movements rising 7.1 percent to 35,920. Transit and inbound passenger segments recorded double-digit growth, led by traffic to and from Mainland China, Southeast Asia, and North America.
Cargo throughput for December increased 3.6 percent to 462,000 tonnes, with transshipment volumes up 18 percent, particularly on routes to Southeast Asia, Europe, and Mainland China.
Airport Authority CEO Vivian Cheung said the strong performance marked a milestone for the airport, reinforcing Hong Kong’s position as a leading international aviation hub. The airport also expanded its network with 30 new destinations last year, including Abu Dhabi, Brussels, and Dallas.
Two major initiatives were also launched to enhance transfer services for Greater Bay Area passengers. The Terminal 2 travel bus lounge opened in September, while a new “Park & Fly” service began in November, providing seamless connections for self-driving passengers.
