At the invitation of the Law Society of Singapore, Tong participated in the Opening of the Legal Year held today at the Supreme Court of Singapore.
Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon delivered the keynote address, highlighting the importance of a strong legal system as a foundation for regional and global commerce. Speeches were also given by Attorney-General Lucien Wong SC and Law Society President Professor Tan Cheng Han, who reviewed recent legal developments and milestones in Singapore.
This year’s event also commemorated the 200th anniversary of the Second Charter of Justice, which established a unified legal framework for Singapore in 1826.
Following the ceremony, around 30 bar leaders and delegates from various jurisdictions gathered for the Presidents’ Roundtable. Tong spoke at a session on talent retention and skills gaps, sharing Hong Kong’s strategies for developing young legal professionals and attracting international talent.
He also discussed efforts to retain in-house lawyers, who form about one-third of the Law Society’s membership and play a key role in supporting Hong Kong’s position as a major international financial centre.
The Law Society of Hong Kong plans to continue such international exchanges to build stronger connections with global bar leaders and highlight the internationalization of its legal profession.
The Opening of the Legal Year in Hong Kong is scheduled for January 19, when the society looks forward to hosting counterparts from around the world.
