Seven years in the making, Hong Kong’s colossal Kai Tak Sports Park—the city’s biggest sports infrastructure project ever—is finally ready to throw open its doors, thanks to the vision and relentless innovation of Chief Engineer Eric Lau and his team.
Since taking the helm in 2018, Lau has overseen the creation of a 50,000-seat main stadium whose crowning glory is the world’s largest-span retractable roof.
Capable of closing in just 20 minutes, the sophisticated structure keeps out torrential rain, tames strong winds, and contains sound so effectively that concerts and matches no longer disturb nearby residents.
What could have been an acoustic and weather nightmare for a venue squeezed between Victoria Harbour and dense housing estates has instead become a model of urban harmony.
Far beyond a simple arena, the completed Sports Park now stands as a gleaming symbol of Hong Kong’s deepening connection to the Greater Bay Area, poised to host everything from international football finals to global music spectacles.
A new documentary titled “Game On, Kai Tak!” chronicles the extraordinary journey, offering viewers an inside look at how Lau’s team turned ambitious sketches into a landmark that has literally opened the sky for a new generation of Hong Kong sport and entertainment.
