A young woman who thought she was heading to a simple job interview in Mong Kok was instead locked into a five-hour high-pressure sales seminar, forced to pay $410 to escape, and left fuming after realizing her trusted friend had set her up for a suspected multi-level marketing scam.
The ordeal began when the woman, responding to a casual invitation over chat, arrived at a crowded office in the heart of the shopping district.
What she expected to be a quick chat about a lucrative part-time role—promised by a friend who claimed her “god-sister” needed help expanding locally—turned into a chaotic scene straight out of a cult recruitment movie.
Within minutes of sitting down, she was bombarded with slide presentations touting monthly earnings of $60,000 for part-timers and urged to buy HK$5,000 worth of products upfront just to “try” the business.
Staff pressed her to recruit more friends, demanded annual membership dues, and insisted on training fees, all while refusing to let her leave freely.
From 7pm until midnight, the relentless pitch wore her down until, desperate to get out, she handed over $410 for so-called membership and materials—receipts stamped with non-refundable clauses.
Even the mysterious “god-sister” who supposedly offered the job never materialized, and the friend had warned her beforehand not to breathe a word to anyone else.
Reflecting later on social media, the woman spotted red flags she had missed: no application form, no clear job description, and a requirement to register with her ID card upon entry.
Her friend blocked her immediately after the incident, leaving her regretting the trust she had placed in someone she considered close.
Online commenters rallied around her, calling the HK$410 a hard-earned lesson and urging her to cut ties permanently, while marveling that pyramid schemes still thrive in 2025.
Many shared their own brushes with similar traps, reinforcing a simple rule: no legitimate employer asks for money before you start.
