A woman suspected of shoplifting at a supermarket in Sha Tin has sparked online buzz after a video showing her pleading for mercy went viral.
On October 11, a 54-year-old woman with a ponytail became the center of attention after being confronted by two store employees near the mall’s bustling atrium, suspected of shoplifting.
The incident, captured in a now-viral video, has sparked widespread discussion across social media.
In the footage, the woman is seen struggling as a male and female employee firmly hold her by the arms.
Her repeated cries of protest echo through the scene as a crowd of curious onlookers gathers.
The male employee can be heard ordering her to “come back with me,” warning that he will call the police if she refuses.
Some bystanders said they clearly heard the woman cry out, “You won’t even give me one more chance,” as she begged the staff not to report her.
The viral clip has ignited a wave of reactions online, with netizens overwhelmingly critical of the alleged shoplifting.
Many praised the store employees for their diligence, commending their efforts to apprehend the suspect.
Comments online lauded the staff’s hard work, with some suggesting they deserve recognition for going beyond their usual duties.
Others expressed disdain for the act of theft, arguing that financial struggles do not justify stealing and urging against leniency.
Police later confirmed to Sing Tao Headline, the sister publication of The Standard, that they received a report at 2.39pm on October 11.
Officers arrested a 54-year-old woman on suspicion of theft. She allegedly stole four boxes of asparagus worth HK$212.
