With Super Typhoon Ragasa set to lash Hong Kong, the Transport Department has rolled out a sweeping series of precautionary measures to safeguard commuters and infrastructure.
The department confirmed it has activated its Emergency Transport Coordination Centre, which will remain on round-the-clock alert to monitor conditions across the territory.
The centre is working closely with MTR Corporation, franchised bus companies, and other public transport operators, alongside government agencies, to ensure services can be adjusted swiftly as the storm approaches.
Chief Transport Officer Silas Leung Yat-kiu said preparations cover four main areas.
Public transport operators have been instructed to put in place contingency plans for service adjustments, both before and after the storm, to reduce disruption for passengers.
Flood and wind protection are another priority. Bridge and tunnel operators, along with other outdoor service providers, have been told to strengthen facilities, watch closely for risks such as landslides or fallen trees, and deploy backup crews and equipment where needed. Vehicle owners are also being urged to avoid parking in low-lying areas vulnerable to flooding.
District offices, meanwhile, are coordinating with contractors to reinforce ongoing roadworks and traffic engineering projects. Extra safety precautions have also been ordered for outdoor automatic parking system projects currently under construction.
Finally, the department will assess the impact of the typhoon on its own operations once conditions allow. Licensing, driving tests and vehicle inspection services are expected to resume promptly, with priority given to restoring order and continuity for the public.
