Hong Kong is targeting the simultaneous opening of the Kwu Tung and Hung Shui Kiu stations by 2034 or earlier, Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu said in his policy address as a key measure to fast-track the development of the Northern Metropolis.
Construction on the individual stations is proceeding in full swing, with Kwu Tung Station scheduled for completion in 2027 and Hung Shui Kiu Station in 2030.
The government has signed the first part of a project agreement with the MTR Corporation to adopt an innovative approach by concurrently developing the Northern Link Spur Line in combination with the Main Line to achieve the accelerated commissioning goal.
These cross-boundary railway projects are intended to fully integrate the metro networks of Hong Kong and Shenzhen, significantly enhancing infrastructure connectivity within the Greater Bay Area and boosting business confidence.
Officials are also moving forward with the Hong Kong-Shenzhen Western Rail Link project connecting Hung Shui Kiu to Qianhai.
Expressions of interest have been invited from contractors and operators for the Hong Kong section.
Additionally, a land use review has been commenced for the Au Tau area to capitalize on the development potential brought by the Northern Link.
The government is considering a larger proportion of private housing in the Sha Po area near the planned Au Tau Station for development into a New Development Area. The MTRCL will conduct this review, with results expected next year.
