A new public pier officially commenced operation at Ma Liu Shui in Sha Tin on Tuesday, offering improved boarding facilities for two popular kaito (ferry) routes serving the northeastern New Territories.
Located next to the existing Ma Liu Shui Landing No. 3 on Science Park Road, the new pier will serve the regular ferry services to Lai Chi Wo and to Kat O (Crooked Island) or Ap Chau. The routes previously using Landing No. 3 have now been relocated to the new facility.
Meanwhile, two other ferry services—to Tap Mun (Grass Island) and to Tung Ping Chau—will continue to operate from the original Ma Liu Shui Ferry Pier.
The newly constructed pier features a modern floating platform design that rises and falls with the tide, maintaining a consistent level with vessels for safer and more convenient boarding. A gangway connects the floating platform to the shore, improving accessibility for all passengers.
Shore facilities include charging stations, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and a digital information display panel to enhance passenger convenience.
This project is part of a broader government initiative to upgrade pier infrastructure across Hong Kong.
Construction is currently underway on ten new piers, with seven—including facilities at Tai Po's Lai Chi Chong and Sam Mun Tsai Village, and Sai Kung's Leung Shuen Wan—expected to open progressively before the end of 2025.
Improvement works for piers at Yung Shue Wan on Lamma Island, Sai Wan on Cheung Chau, and Tai O on Lantau are scheduled for completion in 2026.
