MTR Corporation has filed a police report regarding suspected unauthorized building materials and falsified documentation supplied by a subcontractor working on the Tung Chung East Station construction project.
The railway operator announced on Wednesday that despite thorough investigations since June, concerns about material authenticity under Contract 1202 of the Tung Chung Line Extension project remained unresolved.
The Transport and Logistics Bureau expressed serious concern over the alleged use of unapproved materials, demanding immediate comprehensive investigation by MTR. The bureau emphasized zero tolerance for false documentation and non-compliant materials, noting that the questionable batch will not be used in the project. Authorities pledged continued rigorous follow-up and urged MTR to implement appropriate measures ensuring contractors strictly adhere to contractual requirements.
The issue emerged after Jetway Building Material Limited questioned whether bricks supplied by a subcontractor originated from authorized manufacturers. The materials were intended for non-structural partition walls in station equipment rooms, with installation having commenced in June. Following repeated requests for verification, the subcontractor failed to provide satisfactory proof of authorized procurement.
MTR maintains that the incident will not affect the overall project timeline or incur additional costs. The corporation has instructed the main contractor to submit a comprehensive report and pledged full cooperation with police investigations while continuing to supervise timely project completion.
The Tung Chung Line Extension is being developed under MTR's "ownership model," making the corporation responsible for financing, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of the extension line.
