A heated confrontation between a driver and vehicle repair shop employees over a metered parking space in Tsuen Wan has sparked online debate about the chronic misuse of public parking spots in Hong Kong.
The incident occurred around 8.06pm on Saturday (July 5), involving a 26-year-old driver surnamed Li and a 47-year-old parking attendant surnamed Kwan. Police confirmed no injuries resulted from the altercation.
A 4-minute, 21-second video uploaded that evening shows a shirtless, tattooed man shouting insults at Li as he attempted to park on Heung Wo Street. Another employee in a blue shirt joined the confrontation, accusing the driver of violating unwritten "rules."
Tensions escalated as Li maintained the metered space constituted public property, drawing a crowd of at least three men and one woman - some attempting to de-escalate the situation. Workshop staff argued the parked vehicle would obstruct their business operations, swearing at the driver in an attempt to force him to leave.
"It doesn't matter if I'm new here or not - these meters exist for everyone," Li countered calmly during the exchange.
A female employee eventually intervened, explaining the parking situation and potential operational impacts on their repair shop. Frustrated by the staff's aggressive approach, Li revealed he had already contacted police for assistance.
Despite continued verbal abuse from the shirtless employee, the driver remained composed, stating: "I won't fight you. I'll just lie down here if you dare hit me!"
While the video ends without resolution, online commentators overwhelmingly supported Li's stance against the staff's behavior.
Police confirmed responding to an 8:06 pm disturbance report but found no physical altercation upon arrival. The workshop continued normal operations afterward.
When asked for a comment by the media, the female shop owner said she has instructed staff to maintain professionalism during disputes. She acknowledged the recurring tensions over Hong Kong's limited parking infrastructure while noting the challenges of managing employee frustrations during summer heatwaves.
