Roads connecting Hong Kong International Airport witnessed a traffic nightmare on the final night of the Easter holiday, with vehicle queues stretching half a kilometer as thousands of travelers scrambled to return home before the workweek resumed.
The scene unfolded on Monday as the city experienced a massive inbound wave, with not only land crossings like Lo Wu overwhelmed but also airport access roads clogged well into the night.
Google Maps data showed all major routes around the airport glowing red or dark red, indicating severe congestion by 10pm, with Airport Road bearing the brunt of the gridlock.
The Airport Authority took the unusual step of issuing an alert around 9pm, warning that Car Park One had reached full capacity amid "very heavy traffic" in the area.
Authorities urged travelers to use public transport and check real-time parking availability via the airport's website or "My HKG" mobile app.
