The Hong Kong men's épée team achieved a historic bronze medal at the World Cadets and Juniors Fencing Championships in Wuxi on Tuesday. This marks their best performance ever in the history of Hong Kong's participation in this event.
The team, composed of Yuen Nok-man, Kenton Hsu Jia-huan, Gao Ying-chuen, and Wong Chi-ho, showcased remarkable skill and determination throughout the tournament. They secured victories against the Netherlands, Germany, and Ukraine, advancing them to the semifinals, where they faced Canada.
Despite a valiant effort, the Hong Kong team was defeated by Canada with a score of 38:45, moving them to the bronze medal match against Hungary. The match was fiercely competitive, with the score tied at 17:17 after the first four rounds. In a pivotal seventh round, Wong Chi-ho delivered an outstanding performance, scoring 9:3 to propel the team to a 35:29 lead.
Following Wong's lead, Hsu Jia-huan and Yuen Nok-man continued the momentum, ultimately securing a 45:43 victory over Hungary. This win not only earned the Hong Kong men's épée team their first-ever medal at the championships but also marked a significant achievement in the sport's history for Hong Kong.
