The 54-year-old, now also known as Ma Lai Ka-yee, retired from acting in 2008 following her marriage to businessman Patrick Ma Ting-kung. Since then, she has focused on family life while reinventing herself as a business executive, managing a medical aesthetics company.
Best known for her award-winning role in the TV drama War and Beauty, Lai has largely stayed out of the spotlight, making only occasional appearances in advertisements for her own brand. Calls for her return, however, have persisted over the years, with reports of production companies offering lucrative deals in hopes of bringing her back.
In past interviews, she said any return to acting would depend on balancing family commitments, as she prioritizes raising her three daughters. While Lai has not formally resumed acting, her latest appearance has reignited excitement among fans.
Lai spotted filming in Central
According to East Week, a sister publication of The Standard, Lai was seen at an art gallery in Central taking part in what appeared to be a promotional shoot.
Dressed in an elegant beige outfit and high heels, she drew a crowd of onlookers, with some pausing for a glimpse of the former screen icon.
Despite being in her 50s and a mother of three, Lai appeared poised and self-assured, with remarkably youthful-looking skin.
Observers said she moved through takes with ease, often completing scenes in a single take while maintaining a calm and controlled performance. She was also seen reviewing playback and exchanging views with the director, fine-tuning details with a meticulous eye.
Off-camera, a full production team stood ready, with assistants stepping in as filming paused and stylists quickly refreshing her look. Despite the attention, Lai remained approachable, occasionally stepping out from a private resting area to chat and laugh with staff.
Sources said her return to filming was made possible with the support of her husband, who helps care for their children, allowing her to take on work projects.
