Speaking at a recent film promotion, Chan said they communicate about once a year. "I worry when he calls me, because if he calls, it means there's a problem," he said.

He recalled one Father's Day when Jaycee called to wish him well, but Chan scolded him for only reaching out on special occasions, telling him: "Don't call me on my birthday, don't call on Father's Day. Call me every day, understand?" His intention was to encourage more regular contact, but the remark backfired. Jaycee stopped calling, and now communication goes through assistants.
Chan admitted he was too strict in the past but said his perspective has softened with age. He now just hopes his 43-year-old son lives a safe and happy life.

The star also said he does not need ceremonial gestures on holidays, suggesting people should care for parents daily, not just on special occasions. He cited his own habit of visiting graves on Lunar New Year's Eve or first day instead of Qingming Festival to avoid crowds.
