Hong Kong actress Carina Lau Ka-ling lashed out on Weibo Monday (Nov 10) after her husband Tony Leung Chiu-wai’s image was used without permission to promote health supplements.
Lau posted product screenshots and demanded: “Is this your marketing strategy?” She urged the platform to take action against the infringement.
The retailer claimed it had “sponsored a variety show” that Leung attended and therefore had the right to use his image, but the promotional photos were taken down by Monday afternoon.
Singer Faye Wong was also targeted, with her image digitally altered to advertise an outdoor gear store in Tibet. Wong’s manager Katie Chan stressed the singer never worked with the brand and warned the public against being misled. Legal action is planned.
Image rights are not new to Lau. Over 30 years ago, she sued a Shanghai company for using her photo without consent, a landmark Hong Kong-related case in Mainland China at the time.
