As the new Head of School at Invictus School Hong Kong, Julia Woo is committed to helping students develop their interests and passions, preparing them for a future in a world that’s changing fast.
Invictus School Hong Kong, part of the Invictus umbrella of schools founded in Singapore in 2015, welcomed a new Head of School this February. An educator of great experience with a bone deep belief that “every child wants to succeed and have their own strengths and uniqueness”, Woo built her reputation as a School Leader at the Ministry of Education in Singapore – a country lauded as having one of the top education systems in the world – and as the principal who led two Singapore Secondary schools with impactful outcomes.
Woo is joining Invictus at an exciting time as the school will celebrate its first cohort of secondary graduates this year after opening its secondary division in 2021, in addition to kindergarten and primary that were established in 2019. Woo’s Singapore background and experience will further the school’s holistic, rigorous curriculums aimed to arm students with a global outlook that prepares them for life after graduation.
From kindergarten to primary, students will take on the International Early Years and the International Primary Curriculum, as well as bilingual and multicultural teaching and learning, which Woo says is “instrumental in our diverse world.”
As the pupils advance into secondary, it is all about allowing for greater curriculum flexibility and giving students choices to focus on subjects that they are interested in. Instead of opting for the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) – the choice for the majority of Hong Kong international schools – students will start with the globally recognized Cambridge Lower Secondary curriculum from Years 7 to 9.
Year 10 and 11 students will then sit for the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) exams – one of the most popular international qualifications.
“Not everyone is academically inclined, some may be good at sports or are highly creative. There’s a place for everyone and what we educators need to do is to unleash their potential, help them to discover their talents, and build up their confidence so they can succeed in their field,” Woo explains.
Moving up, pupils will take the A-level, yet another qualification recognized worldwide and relevant for application to universities globally. But as much as a comprehensive curriculum matters, Woo finds the delivery of the curriculum another paramount factor: “Teachers are no longer just imparting content. The role teachers play today is that of a facilitator, guide and a mentor who helps students understand and make sense of the knowledge in today’s world.”
“Most importantly we want to equip children with the right values of perseverance and resilience to pave the path for their future, whether they want to join the workforce or to study further.”
