In a powerful affirmation of its role as a beacon of higher learning, Hong Kong hosts the Asia-Pacific Association for International Education conference, the world’s largest international education trade fair. With 2,700 participants from 70 countries converging in the city, the event was far more than a networking opportunity – it was a resounding declaration that Hong Kong is not only back on the global stage but leading it.
A gathering of global minds
This year’s attendance figures tell a compelling story of scale and significance. The presence of university presidents, government officials, and education policymakers underscores the event’s prestige. What sets APAIE apart from ordinary education fairs is its comprehensive nature: it seamlessly integrates high-level academic exchange with practical student recruitment. The inclusion of research papers and conferences focusing on strategic partnerships, student experience, and well-being elevates the dialogue beyond mere transactional recruitment.
This year’s theme, “Asia-Pacific Partnerships for the Global Good,” resonated deeply throughout the proceedings. It encouraged collaborations not just between universities, but among governments, NGOs, and industry – a holistic approach essential for addressing the complex challenges of our time. The participation of world-class institutions like Sciences Po further enriched these discussions, creating a melting pot of ideas aimed at fostering knowledge exchange for mutual benefit.
Hong Kong’s unassailable position
Hosted by the Chinese University of Hong Kong and co-hosted by the seven other University Grants Committee-funded universities, the event served as a masterclass in the city’s collegiate strength. It provided delegates with tangible proof of Hong Kong’s academic prowess, particularly through visits to the various campuses that showcase world-class facilities and research output.
The timing of this event is particularly strategic. According to the latest Unesco figures from 2023, an astounding 3.3 million students from the Asia-Pacific region pursued degrees worldwide, solidifying the region’s position as the leading source of international student mobility. Hong Kong, with the distinct advantage of having five universities ranked among the world’s top 100 – a feat unmatched by any other city globally – is perfectly positioned to capture this demographic wave.
Beyond the classroom: a holistic experience
With the robust support of the Hong Kong Tourism Board, participants were able to experience the city beyond the campus gates. They discovered a vibrant, safe, and culturally rich metropolis where East meets West – a crucial factor for students considering where to spend their formative academic years. This holistic showcase is vital; it frames Hong Kong not just as a place to study, but as a place to live, grow, and thrive.
For students, the fair served as a one-stop shop, offering insights into everything from academic programs to living arrangements. In a region producing millions of internationally mobile students, the ability to “shop around” and make informed decisions is invaluable.
Adding a layer of cultural soft power to the proceedings, an opening session with Robin Lee, director of the documentary Four Trails, highlighted Hong Kong’s spectacular hiking scenery – demonstrating how the city’s natural assets are leveraged to captivate international delegates beyond the lecture hall.
A legacy of growth and vision
Established in 2004 in Seoul, APAIE has grown exponentially to become the premier higher education event in the Asia-Pacific. While CUHK previously hosted the event in 2013, the scale of this year’s gathering bears no comparison. It reflects not only the growth of the association but also the maturation of Hong Kong’s education sector.
As we look to the future, the success of APAIE 2026 in Hong Kong sends a clear message to the world: this city is a powerhouse of intellectual capital, international collaboration, and innovative research. By bringing together leaders from across the globe under the theme of partnership for the global good, Hong Kong has once again proven that its greatest export is not goods, but ideas – and the bright minds who will bring them to life.
