Heavy rain lashes Guangdong, Lufeng records 435mm, boats swept away in Huilai

Heavy rain battered eastern Guangdong on Sunday, with a weather station in Lufeng, Shanwei recording 435.4mm of rainfall by 5pm, as the province raised its flood response to Level III.

Downpours hit Dongguan, Huizhou, southern Heyuan, southern Meizhou and most coastal areas of eastern Guangdong. In Huilai, Jieyang, multiple boats were swept away in Longjiang, and local authorities suspended classes on Monday.

From 8am to 5pm, 20 towns recorded extremely heavy rain, 62 recorded torrential rain, and 189 recorded heavy rain. Huilai issued a Level I flood response as local rainfall exceeded 100mm.

The weather observatory warned that heavy to torrential rain will continue across most of Guangdong over the next three days, with some southern coastal areas facing extremely heavy downpours and thunderstorms with gusts up to force 10.
