At approximately 10.45am today, a staff member at Sau Mau Ping Post Office, located on the ground floor of Sau Mau Ping Shopping Mall on Sau Ming Road, discovered two cigarette butts in a mailbag while collecting letters from an outside mailbox. Some of the letters were scorched, prompting an immediate call to the authorities.
Fire services and police responded to the scene and, after an initial investigation, classified the incident as arson. Efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the suspect involved.
This mailbox had previously experienced a similar fire incident on December 27 of the previous year. Following that incident, a temporary mailbox was installed outside the post office to replace the original one that was damaged by fire.
Despite these measures, the recurrence of this morning's incident, where some letters were again found scorched, underscores the ongoing risk. Fortunately, most of the letters in the mailbag remained unharmed.
The police posted a notice outside the post office after the December incident, indicating that the case was under investigation. The search for the arson suspect continues as authorities aim to prevent any further incidents.
